Canon is proud to expand its line-up of professional camcorders with the launch of the XF105 Broadcast-standard Portable Full HD Digital Camcorder. With a dramatic reduction in both volume and weight of the body, Canon empowers the XF105 with unprecedented mobility. The XF105 is equipped with a new Canon 1/3-inch CMOS image sensor and a 10x optical zoom HD video lens that supports 1920 x 1080 full HD video, together with the broadcast-standard MPEG-2 4:2:2 50Mbps Canon XF codec and CF memory card as the recording medium, delivering professional level video quality in a compact size. The new XF105 is added with new Infrared mode and 3D assist shooting functions, making them a reliable and versatile camcorder for a variety of projects, such as breaking news, documentary, wedding, ceremonies or 3D shooting.

Full HD Canon XF Codec with MXF format

XF105 record in MPEG-2 Long GOP codec which is reliable and widely used in broadcasting industry, and 4:2:2 color sampling (Canon XF Codec) to achieve 1920 x 1080 Full HD video recording. It can also bring out the best image quality of Canon’s full HD CMOS sensor and lens. The 4:2:2 color sampling can offer twice color data volume and color resolution of 4:2:0 format used in HDV and other codecs, this can maintain the highest image quality for post-production works on composition and color correction. XF105 supports up to 50Mbps recording bit rate, 35Mbps and 25Mbps are also available for more creative shooting options. Besides full HD video recording, users can record in 1280 x 720 pixels at 50p, that is the best for sports and action-packed events while 1440 x 1080 pixels is ideal for HDV format workflow.

Designed specifically to work with the “Tapeless” workflow and Non-Linear Editing (NLE) system, the industry’s standard MXF file format is featured to allow easy transfer of video and audio, ensuring full compatibility and smooth workflows with all post-production units.

Compact Flash Card Recording for Reliable and Low-cost Image Delivery

XF105 records on popular and reliable Compact Flash (CF) memory cards that can provide a larger storage and better versatility. CF memory cards are also a more convenient way for transferring files to computers for post-production editing. And they are also significantly lower in cost than other forms of proprietary recording media which help to reduce the cost of video production.



XF105 offers two card slots for recording that allows the use of two CF memory cards. Double slot recording function is provided for recording the same footage to both cards simultaneously as backup. Relay recording function across two card slots is available for allowing filming to continue without interruption. The CF memory card slots of XF105is hot-swappable that allow for changing the CF card not in use while shooting.

An Improved CMOS Image Sensor with Higher Light Sensitivity and Resolution

Manufactured with a lightweight and compact body, yet XF105 make no concessions to image quality. Armed with a new 1/3-inch 2.07-megapixel CMOS image sensor featuring a RGB color filter, their image performance is as superior as XF305 and XF300. The CMOS image sensor inherits some of the best CMOS technologies from the renowned EOS digital SLR camera, gapless microlenses is incorporated and the distance between the microlenses and photodiodes are narrowed down in order to strengthen light-gathering capabilities. With a pixel-pitch of 2.75µm and a redesigned photodiodes structure that enhances photoelectric conversion rate, signal to noise ratio is also improved, guarantees images with wider dynamic range and high sensitivity with minimal noise. The wider dynamic range enables to reduce loss of detail in light and dark areas even in high contrast situations, best for capturing the delicate skin tone.

The new Canon Full HD CMOS image sensor also incorporates the EOS’s on-chip noise reduction that suppresses noise effectively. What is more, the new CMOS sensor captures full HD video at native 1920 x 1080 resolution that is equivalent to the resolution of full HD video. It can allow direct output without any pixel conversion, faithful image reproduction is guaranteed.

XF105 inherit Canon’s proprietary DIGIC DV III Digital Image Processor that is designed specifically for Canon HD camcorder. With its enhanced algorithm speed, HD video data as massive as 50Mbps recording bit rate can be handled efficiently to reproduce natural, lifelike colors with remarkable tonal gradations and detail. DIGIC DV III works to minimize power consumption, resulting in longer battery life and recording time.

Canon 10x Optical Zoom and f/1.8 Large Aperture for Flexibility and Sharpness Images

XF105 feature a Canon 10x optical zoom HD lens with a 35mm equivalent zoom range of 30.4mm - 304mm. With a rigidly built lens structure of 12 elements in 10 groups, together with two aspherical lens elements and an innovative three moving lens groups design. The lens of XF105 is designed to achieve a wider angle focal length and high quality image with a compact form factor. A lightweight camera body is thus made possible. Their volume and weight are just 40% of the XF305 and XF300, ideal for high mobility outdoor shooting. XF105 with a large f/1.8 – f/2.8 aperture, crispy images can be captured even in low-light situations. A three-level digital tele-converter is added to extend the lens’ focal length by 1.5x, 3x or 6x. Also, an 8-bladed iris can provide a near-circular blurring effect to achieve a more charming background blur.

60cm Minimum Object Distance for a Versatile Optical Performance

Delivering superb performance in both image quality and mobility, XF105 offer strengthened close-up shooting capabilities with a minimum object distance of 60cm for telephoto and 2cm for wide-angle. With magnification brought by the 60cm minimum object distance, extreme close-up shots for small subjects such as a wedding ring from ceremony or dishes at banquet can be captured without using extreme wide angle close-up, creating dramatic compressed effect and a shallow depth of view easily. A natural perspective can be maintained without having the subject overshadowed by the camcorder body.

Super Range Image Stabilization to Keep the Action Running Smooth

To further strengthen shooting quality, XF105 features a Super Range Optical Image Stabilization that promises higher flexibility. The Powered IS mode is designed to compensate for the kind of low frequency vibrations commonly occurred at the 10x optical telephoto end, securing sharp images during telephoto zooming. Also, built with Super Range Dynamic Optical Image Stabilizer (Dynamic OIS), vibrations caused by handheld movements like walking, stairs climbing and running are suppressed, extra movement compensation is provided through the lens gyros system to reduce camcorder shake, so users can keep the action going with stability.

Ultra-large 3.5-inch High Resolution LCD Monitor with Built-in Functional Display

XF105 features a convenient, vari-angle 3.5-inch 920,000-dot high resolution LCD monitor, framing can be done easily with more accurate operation. Also, a built-in Waveform Monitor function that used to be available only on professional LCD field monitor is added to provide a detailed brightness analysis on three primary colors i.e. red, green and blue, accurate exposure can be guaranteed. What is more, Canon’s exclusive Edge Monitor function displays a red and green waveform at the bottom of the LCD monitor that can facilitate users to check and confirm the focus.

Faster & More Accurate Focusing by Intelligent Focusing System

On top of Face Detection, XF105 is equipped with an ultra fast and accurate Instant AF focusing system, using an external AF sensor plus a built-in TVAF auto focusing system, high precision focus can be quickly secured by tracking the subjects’ faces incessantly, making sure the subjects look clear.

XF105 features a new Face Only AF mode, an intelligent technique that can limit auto focusing to detected faces only and switch to manual focus when subjects leave beyond the screen, so the focus will not lose track of the subjects when a person exits the frame or change of the scene. This can make the focusing to become more flexible and accurate.

New Infrared Mode for Any Low Light Conditions

XF105 features an Infrared mode with an IR-cut filter is added within the lens to avoid color of regular shooting being affected by infrared. When this mode is activated, the infrared cutoff filter is retracted from the optical path, allowing more infrared light to pass through to the CMOS sensor. XF105 with Canon‘s exclusive lens coating, a higher transmission rate to infrared lights is enabled.


Also, an infrared LED with a light diffuser are added to widen and even up light distribution, so close range shooting in poorly lit places is made possible. In addition to the default color of green, a more natural white light mode is also available. This new function can allow flexible shooting in dim locations – perfect for assignments like wildlife documentary or breaking news shooting.

New 3D Shooting Assist for an Affordable Alternative

3D video production is getting popular but the pre-production is complex and the cost is high. XF105 offers built-in feature to assist in 3D shooting at a cost-effective way. By making use of an Axis Shift function, optical axis misalignment between 2 camcorders mounted on 3D rig resulted from zooming can be corrected by moving the image-stabilizing shift lens. This can produce better 3D image quality than those subjected to post-editing.

To help users capture unexpected moments, XF105 has a 3-sec Pre REC mode that provides a continuous three-second memory buffer, so not a moment of sudden happening before pressing the button will be missed.

Extensive Image Customization

Custom Picture settings allow users to customize image parameters, including the Gamma, Knee, Color Matrix Adjustment, Saturation, Sharpness, Master Black, Skin Tone and more. So each professional user can design its unique setting for every shooting situation.

Industry-standard Input/Output Format for Full Compatibility

XF105 features a range of video / audio outputs and remote control terminals. For audio, on top of the built-in microphone, 2 sets of XLR input terminals are provided for professional level audio control, both soundtracks from microphone and XLR input terminals can be synchronized together to enhance the dramatic sound effects.

For video, an industry-standard Jackpack terminal allows XF105 to be fully connected to post-production process. A built-in HD-SDI terminal can output uncompressed 1.485Gbps 1920 x 1080 4:2:2 native full HD signals directly for post-production. Genlock function allows multi-camera shooting and the SMPTE Time Code input/output function is included for streamlined output compatibility with post-production workflow.

Intuitive Control Layout and Menu System

From lens, control layout, button arrangements to output ends, XF105 is carefully designed to maximize shooting comfort and operability, preparing the ground for any highly mobile task.

XF105 features a new control layout that consists of a manual ring control, custom dial control and the joystick mounted on the LCD panel. Users can customize the manual ring to control focus, zoom or iris; or assign different functions with the custom dial control, making shooting process smoother, so users can enjoy perfect control despite the compact size.

In addition, customized functions can be assigned to ten buttons, allowing users to optimize the camcorder for their personal shooting preferences.

XF Utility for Simplified Files Management

Compatible for the use on both Mac and Windows platforms, the bundled Canon’s XF Utility allows user to manage lists of clips in a number of display formats with ease, as well as tag, add and edit metadata. It also serves as an efficient means of backing up media. The XF Utility provides a simplified first step in the process of managing and playing back clips taken by XF105.

The MXF file taken by XF105 is highly compatible to major NLE software. With the supplied XF plug-ins, both the Apple Final Cut Pro and Avid Media Composers are supported. The Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 and Grass Valley Edius Pro even provide a native support to the MXF files. These ensure a smooth integration to existing post-production workflow.
